The River Canoe Experience is designed for those who would like to enjoy an exploration down river. This is a full day activity and is suitable for complete beginners, or those who have previous paddling experience and would like a guided river trip. We start our day on Derwent Water, so we have time to play around and talk about paddling techniques and river safety, before heading to the mouth of the River Derwent. This scenic river flows all the way from Derwent Water to Bassenthwaite Lake and is fairly gentle, with lots of small bouncy rapids and sweeping bends. We can relax and enjoy the scenery while we drift down the flat stretches and will also talk about how to read the river and apply effective paddle strokes when we approach each rapid. Hot drinks along the way are included, so you just need to bring a packed lunch with you. Canoes and buoyancy aids are also provided but if you would prefer to bring your own boat, simply get in touch prior to arrival so that we can discuss logistics.
*Please note that under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

getting there
To get to the Ghyll, you take the A66 from Keswick into Braithwaite and then follow signs for Newlands and Buttermere. Shortly after crossing a cattlegrid and after driving past Uzzicar Farm, you will come to a spacious grass parking area on the left side of the road. We will meet here to kit you up for the Ghyll and then it’s a 15 minute walk up an old mining track to get to our get-in point, taking in some stunning scenery along the way.
