We recommend this option for groups who have done the upper section of Stoneycroft Ghyll previously, or for anyone who is reasonably confident on their feet and enjoys a high octane adventure, including families with teenage children. On this session, we journey into the cavernous middle section of the ghyll, a steep sided ravine with big slides and jumps, as well as some exciting abseils down waterfalls. Along with our experienced guide, we move as a group through this deep gorge, where remnants of the old metallic ore mining history of the area are still evident. If you’re a fit group and want an extended session, let us know in advance and we can arrange to add on the top section of Stoneycroft Ghyll before tackling the Canyon. Though groups often change at the meeting point, we are happy to meet you at your accommodation prior to driving down, if you would prefer to get kitted up in your rooms. After the session, hot drinks will be provided for the whole group.

getting there

To get to the Ghyll, you take the A66 from Keswick into Braithwaite and then follow signs for Newlands and Buttermere. Shortly after crossing a cattlegrid and after driving past Uzzicar Farm, you will come to a spacious grass parking area on the left side of the road. We will meet here to kit you up for the Ghyll and then it’s a 15 minute walk up an old mining track to get to our get-in point, taking in some stunning scenery along the way.
